Bead Jewelry of Jobat

by

Jobat lies in the Alirajpur district of western Madhya Pradesh. A predominantly tribal area, it still revels in its traditional colorful festivities. The women here make some lovely ethnic items including bamboo products, dolls and bead-jewelry. Amongst them is a stunning lady, Shanti Bai, who has been doing bead work for ages. She's extremely old and can still thread a needle in low light without wearing spectacles. Astounding! Her daughter-in-law, Jeevan Bala, has been involved in the same craft and is associated with the NIFT cluster program as well. They make absolutely gorgeous pieces that include ‘galsan mala’ (bead-necklace), earrings, bracelets and key-chains. Some are subtle, some loud, but each one reflects their love for color and beauty.
