My internship in Tulika Publishers involved illustrating the retelling of Vyasa's writing of the Mahabharata. The publishers were looking to follow a tongue-in-cheek, humorous style with believable characters, completely different from traditional depictions of Indian myths in film and other media. They wanted the gods and other holy characters to be presented as individuals with interesting quirks and personalities so that children could identify with them instead of placing them on lofty and unreachable pedestals. My role involved illustrating the book that would appeal to children.
