Minor Program at IDC, IIT BOMBAY:
IIT Bombay offers undergraduate students the possibility of taking up minor courses in departments, other than their own department. This provision provides students with a broader foundation at the undergraduate level. As one of the departments of IIT Bombay, IDC now offers a set of minor courses and institute electives. From the department point of view, there is no difference between a minor course and an institute elective. In fact some of the courses we offered were open as an institute elective as well as the minor course.
All students at IIT Bombay have to take two or three institute electives during their four year programme which is compulsory. Some of these might be design courses from IDC. Students wishing to get a minor degree in design are required to take at least five IDC courses. The minor course offering from IDC would include a few introductory courses, a set of courses that offer an overview of the specializations at IDC, and additional courses that faculty may want to offer. In addition, students may want to take up a studio project with any faculty who are interested in offering a semester-long project. In case the same student want to continue further, he/she can continue to next semester with studio project II.
The objective in offering these courses is to provide an exposure in design to students of technology and bringing about a better awareness towards design in the long run. It is also likely that a few of the engineering students who have earned a minor in design, may choose to undertake further studies at IDC.
