'Zero Sum'
- An educational game based on maths, designed by Industrial Design Center was launched by Gakken, Japan on 1st may in the presence of Indian Ambassador, Gakken officials and other dignitaries. Zero Sum was designed by students Priya Ganadas, Chandni Kabra and alumnus Ashish Ganu under the guidance of Prof Athavankar. The game was designed to playfully teach children (age group 6 and above) basic arithmetic operations and order of operations, focusing on achieving a high repeat play value even after the concept of the game is understood.

Game consists of number chips, power cards and zero badges and can be played in a group of 4 to 5. Zero Sum was conceived during Prof Athavankar's 'Game Design' module last year and was later redesigned to suit Japanese audience.

'Zero Sum' has pioneered first of its kind collaboration between Gakken Group, and IIT Bombay. We are thrilled to further shape this relationship with Gakken, an established leader in education.

Modular Houseboat in Composites for Kerala Tourism
- Houseboat in Kerala, mainstay of its tourist industry developed from rice boat has hardly changed in terms of design, use of materials or technique of manufacture, since its birth about 40 years ago. Virtually, it never evolved. Multi-level & cross-disciplinary product development process had to be adopted to achieve this aesthetic, ergonomic, cost-effective & rapidly manufactured houseboat for backwaters of Kerala in India. Hull & superstructure that were built traditionally from heavy wood (responsible for indiscrete deforestation and virtual extinction), and steel structures were replaced by 'smart' composites in modular form. Traditional production on land was exchanged for dual land-water factory – on land factory built modules, assembled on floating hull (27 M long, 4.5 M wide, housing engine and all the service units) on water, optimizing the use of space. Construction man-hours both in terms of reduced 'fatigue' and cost came down, speeding production. The rightly chosen materials like resins & reinforcements sharply reduced maintenance costs while enhancing durability several times. Rusting of iron, degradation of bamboo mats was eliminated by the use of GRP (rust-proof material) unaffected by salinity. Comfort of end-user, the tourist, modern comforts, superior panoramic view from rooms, semi covered decks with protection from Sun and rain with all round visibility, feeling of openness, was made possible by unique design of components. In totality, it is design for function, form, manufacturability, ecology, serviceability, environmental compatibility and respect for local architectural sensibility, all conglomerated into an integral whole

'Tanko Bole Chhe' (The Stitches Speak) is an Animated documentary By Faculty member Prof Nina Sabnani which celebrates the art and passion of the Kutch artisans associated with Kala Raksha. The film traces multiple journeys made by the participants towards defining their identities and towards forming the Kala Raksha Trust and the School for Design. The film uses their narrative art of appliqué and embroideries through which they articulate their responses to life, and events as traumatic as the earthquake and as joyful as flying a kite. Through conversations and memories four voices share their involvement in the evolution of a craft tradition.
