Design of a Display font in Devanagari
Guide: Prof. G.V. Sreekumar
Aim of this project was to design a display font in Devanagari and learn
type design process.
Style of the font was derived from experimental calligraphy, maintaining the uncertainty and spontaneity of calligraphy
and fulfilling the requirements of a display font at the same time. Letterforms were created using a pressure cooker
cleaner and later transformed into a font. The font has been named ‘IDC Swarna’ as it was designed in the Golden
Jubilee year of IIT Bombay. Usage of IDC Swarna is aimed at 72pts onwards. IDC Swarna can be used for book covers,
magazine headlines, logos or film titles
Study of Dhokra Bell metal craft in Ektal, Chattisgarh
Guide: Prof. Nina Sabnani
Mr. Udayram Jhara (Ektal)
Summer project involved study and documentation off Dhokra Bell metal
Craft, one of the earliest known methods of metal casting, at one of the unexplored centers, village Ektal, Raigarh.
I learnt about tribal life and culture, observed the artisans at work and worked with them closely to understand their
subjects, style and approach.
Apart from documentation, I ended up learning the craft. I created a few pieces and a
stop motion animation for the children there. Wax figurines, voices of local children and local settings were used for
the short animation encouraging the children to go to school
Colours
Guide: Prof. Kirti Trivedi
In this project, initially the phenomenon of colour was studied, followed
by a study of the domain of colour studies. One of the most interesting areas, colours and languages, was chosen as
the focus. It is fascinating to know how colours and their attributes are described in different languages. This
project is about names and descriptions of colours in Hindi.
The transition from verbal to visual communication was
traced with these words. Output was compiled in the form of books. Each page opens up to give the reader a
completely new experience of a different colour every time.
