RESUME
My Grandfather’, A Visual Memoir
Guide: Prof. Mandar Rane
This book is a personal narrative about the memories of my grandfather.
Small experiences and anecdotes are woven together with words, old and new photographs and illustrations. It is a
collage that tries to visually recreate certain moments and the character of my eccentric and yet lovable grandfather.
It’s a book for people of all age groups.
The narration is from point of view of a child as well as an adult. It takes the reader from a
relationship between the two people, to the grandfather’s like and dislikes. A book straight from the heart.
Mask Hunter’s Diary, Research and Documentation
Masks are not just art pieces, they carry stories of the culture and
people. This was an independent research project which took the form of visual ethnography. The first destination was
Jawhar, a village near Thane and the other was Leh, Ladakh.
The research culminated into a book on the masks of Ladakh, ‘Mask Hunter’s Diary’. It
covers almost 95 masks, identifies them, explains their symbolism in brief and shows the mask making process. The book
is like a diary that gives an account of the process followed while researching. It carries within it, the vibrant
and intricate Buddhist visual culture and some of its surprises.
Water & Sustainability in the Indian Context
Guide: Prof. Ravi Poovaiah
The aim of the project was to present a different point of view on
sustainability by depicting, and informing about, sustainable practices
related to water in India. The project took the form of an exhibit
called ‘Sacred Waters’. Water is an integral part of the culture and
religion in India. This has lead to water conservation, protection of
animals related to water and in some cases, provision of water to many.
The project looks at reasons behind beliefs related to water.
The underlying theme is to portray water as something more than just a
resource by re-looking at our traditional, religious and cultural practices with
respect to sustainablity.
